SQL, sql server, SQL Server consulting

SQL consultants come in all shapes and sizes so finding the right one for your organisation needs some careful consideration. The right SQL consultant can add huge value to your organisation in a wide number of areas and should be able to advise not only on the best technology to use but the technology to use for your business to thrive.

If you’ve already made the decision to outsource to the experts then let’s delve into 4 tips to help you select the right SQL consultant for your business.

1. Do your research

There really are lots of things to consider so thoroughly researching several SQL consultant contenders will be time well spent. Ultimately you are looking for the best return for your investment both in the short and long term. Availability, cost, technologies, what they are offering, etc.

The SQL consultant may be able to provide SQL Server management, installation, upgrade and migration; health management and performance supervising; 24/7 SQL database administration; database business analysis, etc. Whatever they offer make sure you fully understand the area and do not be afraid to ask lots of questions.

2. Focus on people, not skills

Skills are important but what is even more important are the individuals and teams you will be working with. Don’t be put off by smaller consultancies as they will be keen to prove themselves and can even provide a better service than a large consultancy that have hundreds of clients on the books. You will be working with this individual and team so make sure that they have the not just the tech skills but also the people skills too.

3. Certified AND experienced

Both are especially important, but you should not choose a SQL consultancy that does not have both good certification AND experience. An example of certification could be that the consultancy has worked towards achieving Gold Microsoft Partner status and that their team have completed all the relevant MCP exams.

Case studies are another area where the good work of a consultancy can be clearly demonstrated, hopefully in your industry.

4. Don’t rush into hiring anyone

The final tip is that however short of time you may be, do not rush into committing to a SQL consultancy. Spend some time and talk to the contenders so you will know that when you commit it will be because you are very much aligned, you will work well together, the consultancy has all the relevant certification and expertise, and you can go on together in a fruitful relationship.
